welcome & intro

Hamming it up for my #1 fan aka the race photographer Oh hey there! Thanks for joining me on this inaugural blogging journey. For the record, I'm not counting that time I had a Xanga account in 2004. But because it's been mentioned, let us pour one out for my former corner of the internet --xanga.com/bluejeanbaby817, where a combination of teenage feelings and listening to too many Dashboard Confessional songs led to an online journal I'm glad is no longer available to the public. Now for the who/what/where/whys that will give a nice little intro to this page: Who: I'm Madi, or MK. What: I am ... a twenty-something public health practitioner, Tarheel, pizza aficionado, and age-grouper triathlete that is starting a blog... 85% about triathlon ... 10% about pizza ... and 5% about the other things in my life. Where: I recently relocated from Washington, DC to San Francisco, California Me nomming on a slice at 9:30am post race. Thanks goes to VTS/MTS se...

Fundracing for the SF Marathon with Back on My Feet: Months 1/2 update

Image
Helllllo to my loyal fan base!!!! Well -- the creating a video a week thing sure was ambitious. Work, triathlon training, fun, travel, etc got in the way, and what can I say, I'm a little overeager sometimes! I decided to wrap the past few weeks up in a recap, monthly style 😎 See below for the most recent YouTube update on how training with Lord Frederick for the SF Marathon is going! If anything incentivizes you to watch -- let it be some epic pictures of Lord Frederick and I dressed up for Bay to Breakers ... I am still trucking towards my fundracing goal to support Back on My Feet San Francisco as I run the SF Marathon! Interested in supporting? Fundracing for the SF Marathon with Back on My Feet: Week 2

Image
At long last, what you've all been waiting for .... Week 2's video at the bottom of the post! If you're just checking this out for the first time, here's a link to Week 1's post to see what this is all about. Lord Frederick, Pete, & Achilles team Back on My Feet teams up with November Project! Over the weekend I had a work trip to Florida, so had the joy of completing my long run in temperatures far more hot and humid than what the Bay Area usually blesses me with. As I slogged through my 10 miles, Lord Frederick ran his long run with the Achilles Group, a non-profit that helps physically challenged runners. Back on My Feet volunteer Pete was there to run to Ocean Beach and back guiding Lord Frederick! The rest of the week was filled with fun and words of wisdom as usual. Check out the video for some footage and a special guest (think Antonio Banderas circa 1998) that showed up to the run on Friday! Thanks for your continued support and hope you ...

Fundracing for the SF Marathon with Back on My Feet: Week 1

Image
Hey friends! I am returning from blogging hiatus to shake things up a little and kick off some posts that are a little different from the usual race reporting.   Last year I completed my first marathon and "fundraced" for Back on My Feet San Francisco. You may have heard me talk about BoMF or post about it -- it is   an incredible organization that has been such a large part of my life for the past year and a half living in San Francisco. For those of you unfamiliar with BoMF's work and mission, we aim to combat homelessness through education, financial aid and stable housing opportunities, and most importantly of all, the power of coming together for a morning run. Because my experience fundracing and running the SF Marathon was so incredible, I decided to do it again this year -- but with an upgrade! On July 29th, 2018 , I will be running the 26.2 miles again, this time alongside a BoMF member. Lord Frederick, a team SoMA member, artist, friend, and TOTALLY BLI...

Race Report: Monte Rio Olympic Triathlon

Image
Monte Rio, TRIATHLON WONDERLAND! Race Report: Monte Rio Olympic Triathlon aka Will Tri For Wine Oh hey there! Long time no chat. If you'd like to catch up on my life lately, check out dis last post , because I know it's been a while since I've shown my face around here. Without further adieu, my first race as a CaLiForNiA GuRL: Pre-Race: As of April, I hadn’t planned any races other than Escape from Alcatraz (EFA) and the SF Marathon. However, I had the opportunity to preview the course for the Monte Rio Oly during GGTC’s training camp. Yes, there was some exercise done beyond chugging warm Bud Lights that weekend. The bike and run courses were awesome --- the bike route winds through Sonoma County and then along the coast on Highway 1 while the run course is 99.8% flat and throws some serious shade (the literal sense … its tree-covered pretty much the whole way).   I also figured I should get one race under my belt before EFA so I could at least MINIMALL...

Guess who's back, back again. Guess who's back, pizza in hand.

Happy tri-aversary tooo me, happy tri-aversary to meee, happy tri-aversary dear Maaaadi, happy tri-aversary to me!!! My first tri in Philly. Clearly my enthusiasm for race photography has been there since Day 1. OH HEY THERE! What better time to return to bloggin’ after months of silence than my TRIAVERSARY! June 23, 2013 I jumped into the Schyukill River to kick off my love affair with this sport…. and WHAT a ride it’s been! (note: I recognize the posting date is not June 23 rd , but there was a solid month between when I started writing this and when I finished it. Classic MK.) I feel so so so lucky to have met such amazing people and achieved physical feats beyond what I thought my body was capable of as I swam, biked, and ran my way through these past four years. I’ve been encouraged by an army of supporters along the way, and even roped some of people into joining me in this crazy sport! Ten  years ago I never thought I would be where I am today, and I’m su...

Race Report: Atlantic City 70.3

Image
Only 49 likes ... *sigh* ... the plight of a milennial I'll start this race report off with a lesser known version of "Atlantic City" by Bruce Springsteen aka Madeline Kirch: "Not everyone does tris, baby that's a fact, and maybe everyone that doesn't tri thinks we're really whack. Put your aero helmet on, make your race kit all pretty, and meet me tonight in Atlantic City..." I came up with that little ditty on a long run and was like, yeah I can totes use that as an Instagram caption come race week #doitforthegram. Here goes my first race report. I love talking. A lot. So .... this will be long, no matter how hard I try to cut it short. Bear with me. I registered for Ironman AC 70.3 somewhat last minute because of the whole uncertainty-about-when-I'm-moving-across-the-country-thing, but I had been building up my fitness for a late season half iron distance race. Come mid-September, I was focused, feelin' great, and ready t...
